The best Soviet comedies with English subtitles

Updated 2026-11-03

Soviet comedy is one of the great hidden treasures of world cinema. Millions of people in the former USSR can quote these films line by line, yet outside the region most of them are almost unknown, mainly because for decades they were never properly subtitled.

That has changed. Mosfilm, the studio that made most of them, now publishes restored versions on its official YouTube channel, many with English subtitles. Here are the comedies we recommend first, grouped by the three great masters of the genre and a few unforgettable one-offs. Every film below can be watched free on this site.

Leonid Gaidai: the king of slapstick

Gaidai made fast, visual comedies full of chases, songs and silly villains, the closest the USSR came to Chaplin or the Pink Panther. If you only watch one Soviet comedy, make it one of his.
