Where to watch Soviet films free and legally

Updated 2026-11-03

Search for almost any Soviet film and you will find dozens of pirate copies: blurry uploads, fake streaming sites full of pop-ups, and links that disappear within weeks. The good news is that you do not need any of them.

Many of the most famous Soviet films are now published free by the studios that made them, in restored picture quality, on their official YouTube channels. Watching them there is legal, it supports the studios, and the quality is far better than any pirate copy.

Mosfilm's official YouTube channel

Mosfilm, founded in 1924, was the largest film studio in the Soviet Union and is still working today. It has restored hundreds of its films and uploads them to its YouTube channel, where they can be watched free with adverts. Many have English subtitles, added by the studio itself.

The catch is that the channel is in Russian and holds thousands of videos: trailers, clips, songs and full films. Finding the right film, and knowing which uploads actually have English subtitles, is not easy. That is exactly why we built this site.

How Soviet Classics works

Every film on this site plays through YouTube's official embedded player, straight from Mosfilm's channel. We do not host, copy or download any video. We check every upload: it must be the full film, it must be allowed to play on other websites, and it must have English subtitles.

For each film we add an English guide: what it is about, why it matters and a few facts worth knowing. Subtitles switch on in English automatically when you press play. If a famous film has no official English subtitles yet, we say so clearly on its page.

Tips for watching

Long films are often split into two or more parts on YouTube. On our pages the parts are shown as tabs above the player, in the right order.

If subtitles do not appear, press the CC button in the player. To change the language, use the ⚙ settings button, then Subtitles.

Mosfilm sometimes replaces an upload with a better restoration. We check every film every week, so if something stops playing we fix the page quickly.
