About the film
In 1930–31 Sergei Eisenstein, his assistant Grigori Alexandrov and cameraman Eduard Tisse spent more than a year filming in Mexico. The project collapsed, and the footage stayed in the United States for decades.
When it finally came to Moscow, the elderly Alexandrov used Eisenstein's notes and drawings to assemble a version of the film: a poetic picture of Mexican history, land, religion and festivals.
The images, shot by Tisse, are some of the most beautiful in silent-era cinema.
