About the film
Pushkin wrote his four 'little tragedies' in one autumn in 1830. Each is a short play about a soul taken over by a single passion: Salieri's envy of Mozart, the Miserly Knight's love of gold, Don Juan's desire and a feast held during the plague.
Schweitzer links them together with other Pushkin texts, including the story Egyptian Nights.
The cast is extraordinary, with Smoktunovsky, Yursky and, as Don Juan, the singer-poet Vladimir Vysotsky.
