About the film
Pavel Chichikov, polite and pleasant, arrives in a provincial town and visits the local landowners one by one. He wants to buy their 'dead souls': serfs who have died but are still listed as alive until the next census.
Each landowner is a comic portrait of Russian character, from the sweet dreamer Manilov to the suspicious widow Korobochka and the miser Plyushkin. Little by little, Chichikov's scheme is revealed.
This five-part TV film is the most complete screen version of Gogol's great comic novel.
