About the film

Gordei Voron and Galina Peresvetova each run a rich collective farm in the Kuban, the fertile south of Russia. They compete for everything: harvests, horses, prizes at the autumn fair. They are also in love, and neither will say so first.

Around them, a young couple's romance runs into trouble, horses race, and the whole fair sings. It is a colourful musical comedy with famous songs by Isaak Dunaevsky.

Kuban Cossacks shows a cheerful, abundant countryside that did not exist in the hungry post-war years. It is loved for its songs and stars and often discussed as a perfect example of Stalin-era screen optimism.
