About the film

Fyodor Karamazov is greedy, cruel and comic. His sons are the passionate soldier Dmitri, the cold intellectual Ivan and the gentle novice monk Alyosha. Dmitri and his father are rivals for the same woman, and money and hatred fill the house.

When the old man is murdered, Dmitri is arrested. The film follows the investigation and trial, and the brothers' arguments about God, guilt and freedom.

A powerful, theatrical adaptation with some of the finest Soviet actors of the time.
